Pre-departure

Pre-Departure

I hope to one day fill this blog with observations and details from all the countries I've visited around the world. What better place to start than with Africa? I feel like a modern day Karen Blixen, only American, and nowhere near as classy. A little over a week. That is all the preparation time I have left. Physically, everything is here. I have my bug spray... and a few bottles of sunscreen, but I don't know if I'll be mentally prepared for this trip until I arrive. Everyone asks if I'm excited, and the answer is yes, but to be honest, it still feels surreal. I've never traveled so far, for so long, by myself. The only preparation I have now is to leave behind all my expectations and remember to take a deep breath every day.
I told myself I would welcome adventure, well I'm about to walk straight into the adventure of a lifetime. I am going to Kenya. I'll be working initially at The NEST home for women and children. Who knows what I'll learn, what I'll see. The unknown is what I'm looking forward to most. This gap year so far has proven to be more instructional than anything I learned in high school. No, I'm not practicing math problems or interpreting motifs in literature. I have the freedom to learn outside of academia. College is in the cards for me some day, but not yet. I have a lot to learn before I can hit the books again.
So long for now xoxo
